Ability to do a simple pre-defined research,
Mobile phone or embedded system development and implementation,
Experiences of implementation,
Experiences of contests.
I will provide all the resources as many as possible during the implementation.

If you have learned some knowledge of communications and VLSI design, it's very good, but not a must.
I want the person who really wants to do something in the following years. If you just want to get a diploma, and do not want to pay attention to your research, you will have a hard life.
My requirement for students to graduate : finish a successful HW/SW system design and prototyping or a workable IC for your research (depends on the topics). In the progress, you will learn:
How to do a pre-defined research,
How to find the resources and use them to solve the problems during the research,
Digital systems design skills,
Mobile phone or embedded system development and implementation,
Hardware and software co-design, co-verification, and co-optimization skills,
