Post-graduate (Ph.D)

Ph.D. Program

  1. Admission
    Positions in Ph.D. programs are offered through one of the following processes:
    1. Passing the Entrance Examination of Ph.D. programs.
    2. Direct pursuit of the Ph.D. degree (for registered M.S. students only)
    3. Transferring from Ph.D. programs in other departments of the NTHU.
     
  2. Period of study
    The minimum and maximum period of study for Ph.D. programs are two and seven years, respectively. Part-time students can extend the period of study for two more years.
     
  3. Course requirements
    Ph.D students in the EE department are required take postgraduate courses, ?recognised by the department, for more than 18 credits (excluding the required credits for Ph.D Thesis). Students who pursue Ph.D. degree directly are required to take at least 30 credits recognised by the department.
     
  4. Qualification for Ph.D. candidates
    a. PhD students are eligible for taking qualification exams soon after registration. Qualification exams are held twice a year, and each student can take one to three subjects. For the time, contents, and stardards of qualification exams, please refer to Qualification Exam for Ph.D candidates of the department.
    b. Ph.D. students are required to pass three subjects in the Qualification Examination within three years after enrollment, and at least one of the passed subjects has to be related to the candidate's research field. Failing to pass three subjects within three years after enrollment (excluding an approved temporary?suspension of study) leads to the dismissal of the Ph.D study.
     
  5. Thesis requirements
    Each Ph.D. student are required to have at least one adviser before the end of his second-year study. (Professors, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors in the Department of Electrical Engineering are all eligible for being advisers). If a Ph.D. student can not find any thesis adviser before the required period, the Department Chairman will assign two professors to investigate the difficulty. If the two professors conclude that the student does not fit into the Ph.D. program of the department, the student will be recommended to withdraw his Ph.D. study. In case that a student's principal adviser does not belong to the faculty of the EE department, the student has to have a second adviser who belongs to the EE department.
     
  6. Ph.D. Degree Committee
    The department will organise a Ph.D.-Degree Committee for each Ph.D. student in his first year. The committee consists of the student's adviser, one member recommended by the adviser, and one member nominated by the chairman of the department. The committee members will be the examiners in "the Ph.D. Degree Examination".
     
  7. Content and Quality of a Ph.D thesis
    a. A Ph.D thesis is required to be an original piece of research work which is completed by a PhD candidate under the supervision of his advisor. The thesis itself has to be a complete work, with careful discussions and systematical structures.
    b. The research results are to be shared between advisers (or project leaders) and students involved in the same project. If a student changes to have a new adviser, the results obtained from his/her previous project must not be included in his/her thesis or any publication without the consent of his/her ex-advisers.
    c. In addition to thesis, a Ph.D. student is required to publish at least one paper on international journals as the first author (except for the adviser). The quality and quantity of published papers are to be evaluated by the Ph.D. Education Committee of the department.
     
  8. Preliminary application for PhD degree Examination
    Ph.D. candidates are required to submit the following documents to the Postgraduate Education Committee of the department for applying for an oral defense as PhD degree examination.
    1. Certificate of passing qualification exam.
    2. Published papers (note SCI, impact factor)
    3. Official transcripts proving that the course requirements have been fulfilled.
    4. Certificate of passing test on first foreign language ability.
    5. Originality of the Ph.D thesis (described within three pages)
     
  9. Oral defense (Viva)
    The oral defense for a PhD degree examination is subject to the Code of Practice for Ph.D. Degree Examination. For detailed information, please refer to http://academic.ad.nthu.edu.tw/Archive/18_rules/000964.php.
     
  10. Revocation of a Ph. D. Degree
    If a Ph.D thesis is prosecuted for containing plagiarised or faked materials, and if the prosecution is proved to be true by the jury organised by the university, the awarded Ph. D. degree will be revoked and the Ph.D student will be disqualified from pursuing a Ph.D degree, and the student's Ph.D. study will be dismissed.
     
  11. Any amendment to the program above must be approved by the Education Committee of the Department of Electrical Engineering before its implementation.
